Phonics

How we do it and what you can do to help your child.

We currently teach phonics throughout KS1, with an emphasis on Nursery to Year 1, and the scheme which we use is called Letters and Sounds.

The children are streamed from Phase 2 to Phase 5 and every child has approximately 20 minutes teaching each morning.

To find out more about how we teach this important element of literacy, please ask us or, alternatively, visit the Letters and Sounds or Phonics Play website listed in the ‘links’ section.

The Phonics Play website is a good one to visit if you’d like to work with your child to develop their phonics skills.

For the teaching of reading, we use a  number of reading schemes / publishers and we combine hearing individual readers, guided reading groups and whole class reading comprehension. Key Stage 2 readers also take advantage of the 'Accelerated Reader' scheme which is an online quiz linked to all our reading books. This scheme was introduced just over a year ago and has had a dramatic effect on both the children's comprhension ability and there enthusiasm.

We believe that reading is at the root of all other learning and that equipping our children with the love and skill of reading is one of our most important roles.
